Description

During mating season both male and female develop these beautiful plumes called aigrettes. These appparetnly make them more desireable to potential mates. In the early part of the last centrury these plaumes were highly sought after as a decoration for womens' hats. They became so popular that the Egrets were hunted to near extinction until, largely due to the efforts of John Audubon, legislation was passed to pretect them. Now Great Egrets are no longer endangered.
